Funding

Paediatrician examining a child The RDS SE supports researchers who wish to develop funded research proposals. It is designed primarily to support applications to the National Institute for Health Research programmes. Priority is given to researchers applying to the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit programme. Other sources of funding may be considered, particularly if they fall into the NIHR portfolio.

NIHR funded programmes

The NIHR funds ten funding streams to develop research evidence to support decision making by professionals, policy makers and patients, to make this evidence available and to encourage its uptake and use. It funds a range of programmes addressing a broad array of health priorities. Funding is based on the quality and relevance of the research to personal social services and the NHS.

NIHR Research for Patient Benefit Programme (RfPB)

The RfPB programme is a national response-mode programme for high quality investigator-led research projects. Funds are available on a population basis. Applications are assessed and processed by a regional committee. Applications are accepted at any time and will be considered at the next regional committee. All researchers in England are eligible to apply. Joint applications from NHS researchers with academic partners are welcome although funding will normally be awarded to the NHS partner.
