Dr Bernadette Egan (Deputy RDS SE Director and Research Adviser)
Bernadette Egan is the Surrey Academic Site lead and former Deputy Director of the Research Design Service South East. Bernadette joined the RDS SE as an adviser in March 2010 and has considerable experience of supporting researchers with all aspects of preparing applications for applied health and social care research funding. Bernadette and her team are based in the Faculty of Health & Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey.
Bernadette is a Senior Research Fellow in the Food, Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre at the University of Surrey, where she has worked on a broad range of projects, primarily in the domain of public health nutrition. Bernadette has considerable experience of using both qualitative and quantitative research methods and is very experienced in all aspects of project management. Sources of funding for projects have included the Food Standards Agency, EU FP6 and Horizon 2020, Safefood and most recently Surrey County Council.
Bernadette has been a member of the University of Surrey’s Ethics Committee for many years and is currently Acting Chair for the Committee.
Bernadette has well-established networks across Kent Surrey and Sussex, working in close collaboration with the Applied Research Collaboration and Clinical Research Network. Since 2019 Bernadette has the role of Deputy lead at Surrey for the Applied Research Collaboration in KSS.
Bernadette has a particular interest in supporting the growth of health and social care research capacity in the region and is currently a mentor with the ARC KSS Academy. She is a member of the Clinical Academic Career Group at the University of Surrey, supporting the development of health and social care professionals locally and was involved in piloting the NIHR Nursing and Midwifery Incubator Advisory Service.
