New HRA public involvement guidance for research applicants

The Health Research Authority has issued new guidance to help researchers applying for ethical review better identify how their proposed study has been shaped by the involvement of patients, carers, service users or members of the public. To analyse and monitor the impact of the guidance, the HRA is seeking organisations which regularly submit applications for ethical review to become ‘Test Beds’ for the new guidance by systematically using it for all of their applications for six months.
The invitation is open to organisations in any area of health and social care research, and for any type of study that needs ethical review by an NHS Research Ethics Committee.
Please contact the HRA’s Public Involvement team at hrapublicinvolvement@nhs.net to find out more.

Research Design Service South East’s Grant Writing Workshop

The NIHR Research Design Service South East (RDS SE) held a Sussex based Grant Writing Workshop on the 25th April to support researchers with the design and writing of their research applications. The day involved RDS advisers, with expertise in research design, statistics, qualitative methods, trials, and public involvement, working with teams of researchers from across the Kent, Sussex and Surrey region. The researchers worked on a range of research topics including HIV, promoting physical activity in older adults, and tackling obesity in children and young people and are preparing applications for the NIHR’s Research for Patient Benefit programme, Public Health programme and the National Osteoporosis Society.

Dr Yvonne Gilleece, from Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust, said “Having the expertise of experienced grant writers commenting on and critiquing my research proposal, I have a sense of what I need to do to start getting my proposal into a more mature state.”

If you’re a health, social care, or public health researcher based in Kent, Sussex or Surrey, do contact the RDS SE for support when applying for funding.

We’ll be holding another Sussex based, NIHR Workshop in October, so do please get in touch if you’re working on a grant application and are interested in attending.
